One asked, “How are you?”
What a mistake that turned out to be. This person launched into every ache and pain and all their problems and just did not seem to want to stop.
The victim just stood there, helplessly trying to smile and nod at the appropriate times.
I thought to myself, “I bet that is the last time you ask her that!”
After all, he had asked.
But there is a time and a place to dump your stuff. Also, it is really not a good idea to dump your stuff on everyone who smiles and says hello, or asks you how you are doing.
Often, the person is just saying hello and trying to be polite. A good response might be, “I’m great! How are you?”
We can have best friends, a minister or spiritual advisor, or someone close to us, that we can share all of out woe’s with.
The truth is that most people don’t want to hear about it. They have their own stuff to deal with. And also, we have to ask ourselves, “Am I trying to get someone to agree with me?” and “Am I trying to get attention?”
I’d imagine that everyone has been guilty of this at some point. I know I have.
And watching this event really allowed me to see what it looks like from a different angle.
In any case, next time you are shopping and you see someone who says, “Hi there! How are you?” Try not to give out a little too much information.
